Am Hasselbachgraben – Technik im Wald

Stolberg

A stream that is planned: The Hasselbachgraben appears natural – yet it is an artificially created water structure in the forest.

Those walking along the Hasselbachgraben see a streambed that winds through woods and meadows. However, the ditch was created by humans and combines technical water management with a design that blends into the landscape.

Since the Middle Ages, waterways have been altered to reliably supply mills, forges, and fields. Even around Stolberg, artificial ditches shaped the valleys to ensure that copper farms and hammer mills had enough water power.

Today, the Hasselbachgraben serves a different purpose: It directs additional surface water into the Dreilägerbachtalsperre, which provides drinking water for the region.
