Hecken – grüne Grenzen mit Geschichte und Leben

Stolberg

Quiet yet alive: Hedges stretch like green lines across the landscape.

What used to be a boundary line has today become a link – between fields, meadows, and forests. They separate and connect at the same time, provide shade, block wind, and offer countless species a home.

Many of these living fences disappeared during land consolidation, and with them connections and retreat places were lost. But their return is worthwhile: For hedges improve the microclimate, retain moisture in the soil, filter dust, and promote biodiversity.

Where hawthorn, hazel, blackthorn, or dog rose grow, birds find nesting places, insects find nectar, and small mammals have safe shelter. Gentle care is particularly important: species-rich mixtures, gentle transitions, and some dead wood keep hedges alive and the landscape diverse.
