Hecken – grüne Grenzen mit Geschichte und Leben

Stolberg

Silent and yet alive: Hedges run through the landscape like green lines.

What used to be a boundary line is now a link - between fields, meadows and forests. They separate and connect at the same time, provide shade, keep out the wind and offer a home to countless species.

Many of these living fences disappeared in the course of land consolidation, and with them, connections and retreats were lost. But their return is worthwhile: hedges improve the microclimate, retain moisture in the soil, filter dust and promote biodiversity.

Where hawthorn, hazel, blackthorn or dog rose grow, birds find breeding grounds, insects find nectar and small mammals find safe shelter. Careful maintenance is particularly important: species-rich mixtures, gentle transitions and some deadwood keep hedges alive and the landscape diverse.
