Talsperren in der Rureifel

The dams in the Eifel form one of the most important water management systems in Germany. The Rur dam, one of the largest reservoirs in the country, regulates the water balance of the Rur, protects against flooding and supplies renewable energy. The historic Urft dam, once Europe's largest dam, makes a significant contribution to the drinking water supply. The Wehetalsperre primarily serves to protect the Wehebachtal and lower Inde valleys from flooding and to supply drinking water to the Aachen and Düren areas. The reservoirs are supplemented by the Heimbach reservoir with the Heimbach Art Nouveau power station and the Obermaubach reservoir.

In addition to their technical importance, the reservoirs are a central component of tourism in the Rureifel. The lakes are surrounded by hiking trails, cycle routes and viewpoints. Water sports such as sailing, canoeing or swimming are possible in many places, and places such as Schwammenauel or Heimbach offer gastronomy and leisure activities. The white fleet Rursee-Schiffahrt operates seasonally on the Rur and Urft lakes. The Urft dam and parts of the Rur dam are located in the Eifel National Park, which offers a very special nature experience. The dams combine functional infrastructure with a highly attractive landscape.
