A microcosm of its own: Beneath the surface of the Hasselbach, a world begins that can easily be overlooked while hiking. Among gravel, stones, and aquatic plants live numerous small creatures – often only a few millimeters in size, but constantly in motion.

Caddisfly, mayfly, and stonefly larvae are sensitive bioindicators: They indicate how well-ventilated and clean the water is. Together with snails, amphipods, and other invertebrates, they break down leaves and plant debris and form the foundation of many food chains.

Because these small creatures are relied upon by other species: Amphibian and dragonfly larvae find food in the stream, while dipper and kingfisher search for prey along the banks. Above the water, bats catch insects at dusk that emerge from the stream or are on the shore.

View along the current: Take a few steps closer to the stream and let your gaze wander with the current. Where does the water rush over stones, and where does it collect more calmly between gravel and plants? Take a moment – with a little patience, even tiny small creatures can often be discovered that otherwise remain hidden.
