Hürtgenwald – Kriegsschauplatz und Nachwirkungen

Stolberg

The Hürtgen Forest is one of the most well-known battlefields of World War II. Between the autumn of 1944 and the spring of 1945, heavy fighting occurred here between American and German troops. The dense forest, difficult weather, and hard-to-access terrain made the fighting particularly costly.

Even around Süssendell, these events left traces: bunkers, trenches, and destroyed farms show that the entire region was affected by the war. Supply routes, troop movements, and retreat areas extended far beyond the actual combat zone and reached the surrounding forests and villages.

Many of these remnants are now only recognizable as terrain structures or individual building remains. They demonstrate that war impacts far beyond the actual battlefield and always affects the surrounding landscape.
