Hürtgenwald – Kriegsschauplatz und Nachwirkungen

Stolberg

The Hürtgen Forest is one of the most famous battlefields of the Second World War. Heavy fighting between US and German troops took place here between fall 1944 and spring 1945. The dense forest, difficult weather conditions and inaccessible terrain made the fighting particularly costly.

These events also left their mark around Süssendell: bunkers, trenches and destroyed farms show that the entire region was affected by the war. Supply routes, troop movements and retreat areas extended far beyond the actual battle zone and also reached the surrounding forests and villages.

Many of these remains are now only recognizable as terrain structures or individual structural remains. They show that war has an impact far beyond the actual battlefield and always affects the surrounding landscape.
