Hoch über dem Tal der Rur: Nideggen

Nideggen

On the northern edge of the Eifel - high above the red sandstone cliffs visible from afar - lies the former ducal town of Nideggen. From the 12th century, Nideggen with its castle was the residence of the Counts of Jülich. Nideggen offers visitors an interesting piece of history and at the same time is a modern place to live. The attractiveness is characterised by the lovingly maintained, historic town centre and Nideggen Castle. Two well-preserved town gates with the red sandstone town wall dominate the silhouette and let the visitor feel the breath of the past. One of the wildly romantic alleys leads from the market square directly up to the mighty castle complex with its keep, which houses the Rhineland Castle Museum. Those who do not shy away from the ascent to the castle will be rewarded with an impressive view of the Rur valley. The town looks back on 700 years of eventful history and still impresses with its medieval character. Historical guided tours of the town on various themes invite you to take an interesting journey through several centuries of town history. Contact and information can be obtained from the Nideggen National Park Office, Im Effels 10, 52385 Nideggen, +49 (0)2427-3301150 or nideggen@rureifel-tourismus.de. The most modern Eifel youth hostel in the DJH Rhineland Regional Association is located in the vicinity of the National Park Gate in a dreamlike setting; in addition to modern hostel facilities, it also offers spacious rooms for conferences and seminars. On the roof of the youth hostel there is an " Eifel view". From here, visitors can enjoy a fantastic view of the vast Eifel landscape. The viewing platform is freely accessible at all times via the external staircase of the youth hostel. 300 kilometres of hiking trails and a well-developed network of cycle paths lead from Nideggen through the densely wooded Rur-Eifel region and offer a wealth of opportunities to get out and about in nature. Visitors can also relax at the wonderful Eschauel natural bathing beach on the Rursee in Schmidt. The nature reserve "Buntsandsteinfelsen im Rurtal" around Nideggen is an imposing and popular climbing area; climbers can expect a challenging terrain for a challenging terrain for individual climbing fun. Be very welcome in the ducal town.
