Dreilägerbachtalsperre – Quarzitklippen älter als jedes Leben an Land

Stolberg

On the descent to the Dreilägerbach dam, light-colored quartzite cliffs of the Cambrian stand out: rocks that are among the oldest in the entire region. They were formed more than 500 million years ago from fine sands that collected at the bottom of a primeval sea.

Over the course of time, pressure and heat compacted these layers into solid, resistant quartzite - a glass-hard rock that hardly weathers at all. Its light color and rough-grained surface make it unmistakable.

When the dam was built in the 20th century, this quartzite served as a natural foundation. Today, the oldest rock in the region supports a modern building - a symbol of how landscape and use are constantly reconnecting.

History you can touch: Place your hand on the rock. You are touching stone that is over half a billion years old - older than any life on land.
