Dorfspaziergang Floisdorf

Mechernich

Germany's most beautiful village. Floisdorf was awarded this title almost fifty years ago in the national competition. Quite some time has passed since then, but the charm of the Börde village remains unchanged. Nestled in the hollow of a stream, houses from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries characterize the cohesive appearance of the village. The neo-Romanesque church of St. Pankratius forms the visible focal point of the community of around 320 inhabitants. Floisdorf, which today belongs to Mechernich, was first mentioned in a document in 893. In the centuries that followed, the ruling powers changed frequently - from Prüm Abbey to the Dukes of Jülich to the French and back to the Prussians. In the 19th century, life in the village, which was characterized by small-scale farming, came under pressure due to the division of the common land and made many family side businesses necessary. The integration of refugees in the first half of the 20th century and the influx of city dwellers up to the present day also significantly changed the social and economic structure: Floisdorf transformed from an original farming village to a residential location. Old and new Floisdorf residents are united in their love of the recreational landscape right on their doorstep. Flowering fruit trees, bright rapeseed fields and a wide horizon are typical of the village. Home is also home to a community life that is shaped by a number of associations that are as modern as they are traditional.

Where the fertile Bördeland landscape meets the still gentle hills of the northern Eifel, Floisdorf, then called "Flavedesdorpht", was founded in the 9th century. The idyllic village walk shows that life is still good here today. The first thing you pass is a wayside cross, of which there are quite a few in the village and along the country lanes around it. Erected as a sign of faith, gratitude or hope. The neighboring parish church of St. Pankratius is a far greater sign of Catholic faith. Consecrated in 1892, the church has remained true to the neo-Romanesque architectural style of the turn of the century throughout all the renovations. It remains "pious" for the next few meters: the path leads along another stone wayside cross and the flower-decorated Lourdes Grotto to the Zehnthof. The gable inscription on the beautifully restored half-timbered house gives the year of construction as 1743. Just outside the village, things become romantic: two chestnut trees that have grown together protect a privately donated field cross from 1698. Shortly afterwards, the bench at the Pankratius fountain invites you to take a short break. It supplied people and animals with fresh water until 1962. The entertaining tour ends at the Drach family's stonemason's house and with the certainty that Floisdorf is still a hot contender for a medal when it comes to sustainable and lovable villages.
