Dorfspaziergang Berg-Thuir

Nideggen

In Berg, walkers can truly experience "high feelings". The wonderful location on the edge of the Nideggen high plateau ensures this. Around 700 Berg residents enjoy this natural luxury every day. The paths to fascinating vantage points are short, whether steeply downhill into the Rur valley or as far as the Siebengebirge mountains. The elevated location impressed the Celts and Romans, who mined ore in the nearby Badewald forest. The Franks also liked the mountain air, as evidenced by grave finds at "Breidel". The fact that the Nibelungs were also at home here and that the people of Berger can consider themselves direct descendants of the bold dragon slayer Siegfried probably falls more into the realm of heroic epic. While the village walk takes you to the impressive Clemens Church, wayside shrines and architectural gems, one thing should not be forgotten: Just one kilometer away, in the valley of the Thuirbach stream, lies the rural and extremely tranquil hamlet of Thuir. Berg has formed a dual municipality with Thuir for a long time. A duet that works perfectly despite the differences. Treat yourself to a walk down through fields where the famous Eifel malting barley often grows. Discover the wealth of orchids on the nearby shell limestone hilltops or, with a bit of luck, spot one of the many little owls that have returned here. Berg- Thuir - a village community with wonderful ups and downs.

A walk on a consistently "high level". This promise is easy to keep in Berg thanks to its exposed location on the edge of the Nideggen plateau. The altitude is accompanied by exceptional panoramic views as far as the Siebengebirge. However, it's not just the views into the distance that make this circuit so appealing, but also what is "close at hand". This begins with the impressive Clemens Church, which dates back to the 12th/13th century. The building combines charming different architectural styles and sets a unique acoustic accent for the diocese of Aachen with the special tone sequence of its bells. The tour of the village continues to Bärs Kreuz. Often destroyed and always rebuilt by the people of Berger, in the past it was a stop on the annual Corpus Christi processions. Continuing out of the village to the west, you reach the legendary Clemensstock. Today, Christians from Nideggen, Berg and Abenden celebrate Corpus Christi in the open air at this place, which was already chosen by the Celts for religious festivals. Two lime trees mark this extraordinary, 345-metre-high vantage point, visible from afar. Back in the village, the Weißer Hof, a typical 18th century Eifel farmstead, awaits attentive observers. It is characterized by the functional arrangement of residential and farm buildings under one roof. The short circular route ends at the stone wayside cross on Clemensplatz. A prelude that will certainly whet your appetite for further tours around the attractive Bördedorf community of Berg-Thuir.
