Die Wollwäscherei am Weserbach – Wasser, Arbeit, Wandel

Roetgen

The idyllic Weserbach stream was not only the source of the rushing water, but also the place where the work on the raw material itself began.

As early as 1815, a wool laundry was operated in the green valley south of the village, as the water there was considered particularly pure. The sheep were washed in the stream and the shorn wool was then cleaned in vats with hot water and soap.

The smell of damp wool and steam lingered over the valley, later joined by the pounding of the steam engine. Generations made a living from this work until industrialization led to the emergence of larger businesses and smaller locations lost their importance. The buildings disappeared and the land reverted to nature.

If you follow the course of the stream today, you will hardly see any traces. You can only guess that there was once a wool laundry here, which had a significant impact on Roetgen's development, at individual points along the banks.
