Der Hohlweg: Spuren im Boden, Spuren im Alltag

Roetgen

A path that has formed itself: Hollow paths are created where people and animals have used the same route for generations. Rain washes away soil, wheels and footsteps compact the ground - so the path slowly digs itself deeper and deeper into the terrain.

There are also sections like this on the Alter Kirchweg. Because those who wanted to get to Stolberg were not looking for the most beautiful route, but the most reliable one. A route that they knew, that had proven itself - and that was used again and again.

The hollow path is therefore more than just a detail on the edge of the path. It shows that the old church path was not a one-off event, but a recurring routine. And the ground still remembers it today.

Path check: Look at the edges of the path: where is the earth particularly deep? Where does more greenery grow, where is it barren? This often reveals exactly how long and intensively a route has been used.
