Buntsandsteinfelsen

The red sandstone cliffs in the Rur valley are among the most extraordinary natural areas in the Rur Eifel. Their striking, rust-red rock faces were formed around 240 million years ago when violent storms transported masses of sand and debris into depressions, where they were deposited and solidified over millions of years to form the conglomerates visible today. Later, the Rur cut deep into the rock and exposed the impressive formations. The rocks are home to an astonishing diversity: rare lichens, specialized plants and typical rock dwellers such as eagle owls and bats find breeding grounds, crevices and caves here. As one of the northernmost rock formations in Central Europe, the red sandstone cliffs are a valuable natural gem and a fascinating destination for nature-loving visitors.
